For Students

Students selected for All County Band and Choir represent their schools in countywide honor ensembles. These musicians rehearse and perform challenging repertoire alongside peers from across the district, developing advanced performance skills and musical excellence.

All State Band and Choir provides an elite performance opportunity for the highest-achieving student musicians in the state. Selected through competitive auditions, students collaborate with top performers and directors in a prestigious musical experience.

Athletics play an important role in the middle school experience, providing students with opportunities to develop teamwork, leadership, sportsmanship, and school pride. Our athletic programs encourage students to stay active, build lasting friendships, and represent their school both on and off the field. AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination) supports students in developing the skills needed for college and career readiness. Members focus on organization, study strategies, critical thinking, and academic success through structured support and peer collaboration.

Chess Club encourages strategic thinking, patience, and problem-solving through the game of chess. Students of all experience levels are welcome to learn, compete, and grow their skills in a supportive environment.

Participation in the school play/musical offers students the opportunity to explore acting, stage production, and performance. Participants work together to bring productions to life while building confidence, creativity, and teamwork skills.

Students at Fred Thomas Middle School compete inter-scholastically in football, field hockey, boys and girls basketball, baseball, softball, boys and girls soccer, boys and girls lacrosse, wrestling, girls volleyball and track.  The goal of the sports program is to assist students in the development of sportsmanship, camaraderie, and school spirit as well as athletic skills.

Leaders in Bloom is a leadership group designed to empower young women through mentorship, personal growth, and service. Members focus on building confidence, leadership skills, and strong peer relationships.

Our teams participate in four county meets and the State Math Invitational Meet held in Dover during the Spring. Math League practice sessions are usually held one-two times per month, with most practices taking place in the afternoon from 3pm- 4:15pm.  Grade 8 will sometimes meet at lunch to avoid conflicts with after-school sports practices. Practices not only help in reviewing needed math skills but also help the coaches determine who will represent the school at each meet.

Morgan’s Message is a student-led initiative focused on mental health awareness and breaking the stigma surrounding mental health in athletics and school communities. Members promote open conversations, peer support, and wellness resources for all students.

Odyssey of the Mind is a creative problem-solving program where students work in teams to tackle open-ended challenges. Participants develop innovation, teamwork, and critical thinking skills through imaginative solutions and performances.

Each year, two representatives from each grade will be selected to represent their class and communicate with the student body about upcoming events.  Students this year will help run events like Karaoke Night, a school dance as well as other activities to help raise money for our school’s PBS committee.  Students who are members of the student council are also eligible to run for office in the State of Delaware.

Yearbook club meets the entire school year, after school for a few hours and design, edit, and work on the yearbook. The books are completely student created and produced, from taking the pictures, editing them and creating the layout of the pages.  Students will start to learn how to use Photoshop and other digital photo editing programs and will begin to develop general photography techniques.

Young Men Committed to Action is a leadership and mentorship group focused on character development, responsibility, and service. Members engage in discussions, community projects, and activities that promote personal growth and leadership.
