Course Description: Studying different genres of music ranging from Blues to HipHop. Discussing instrumentation and characteristics of this music. Using garageband to create their own music within these different genres.

Objectives/Goals/Targets: Students will be able to identify different characteristics of the various styles of music. Students will be able to identify the style of music based on the characteristics they hear. Students will be able to create their own music within these varying styles.

8th Grade Music

Course Description: Studying different styles of American music from Ragtime-Rap. Discussing the cultural and societal changes that were happening alongside this music.

Objectives/Goals/Targets: Students will be able to identify different characteristics of the various styles of music. Students will be able to identify the style of music based on the characteristics they hear. Students will be able to link music with some socio-cultural concepts happening during each decade.

Choir Grades 6-8

Course Description: Learning key concepts in music including, rhythm, pitch, dynamics, sight reading and other musical concepts through singing.

Objectives/Goals/Targets: Students will be able to read music from a choral score. Students will be able to sing a varied repertoire of music. Students will be able to identify key signatures and time signatures. Students will be able to sing in harmony. Students will be able to sight sing musical examples and apply this skill to their choral music.

Additional Choir Information

Concerts:
Athletic Events: Singing National Anthem at selected Beacon sporting events. Each grade will have a different performance. Students are encouraged to stay for the duration of the game but may leave after we sing.

Attire: Cape or Beacon Gear

Ugly Sweater School Concert: Wednesday December 21 during afternoon encores @Beacon Middle. Singing some holiday favorites to kick-off winter break!

Winter Concert: Thursday January 5^th 6:30pm @ Beacon Middle School

Attire is black bottoms and white top

Spring Concert: May 11th 6:30pm @ Beacon Middle School. This concert is for 6^th and 7^th grade students ONLY.

8^th Grade Showcase: May 16th 6:30pm @ Beacon Middle School. This concert is only for 8^th grade students.

Rehoboth Bandstand Concert: First week of June.

AUDITIONED GROUPS

All State Auditions: Applications must be submitted by October 21st. *Only 7^th and 8^th grade students are eligible. Students must practice with Ms. Schlitter prior to the audition. Auditions are to be submitted between November 16-30.

County Choir: This is a non-auditioned group. Ms. Schlitter will select 7^th and 8^th grade students to attend.

FIELD TRIPS

High School Musical Trip: All grades will be invited to attend the high school musical in early March. There will be a minimal fee to pay for busing.

Shorebirds Field Trip: For 6^th grade students, sometime in May. $20

Amusement Park Field Trip: 7^th & 8^th Grade students, sometime late May/June. $40
